#1. Studies have shown that doula support can help women have shorter labours and use less pain medication. Women who use doulas also tend to be more satisfied with how their labours turned out according to the Cochrane study. In another study, Doula support was linked with greater cervical dilation before women received their epidurals, (which tends to reduce the chance of a c-section) as well as higher APGAR scores for the babies at 1 and 5 minutes.
#2. A doula is there for you and only you. Well, and your family too. The doctors and nurses are there to take care of you but they also have their other tasks at the hospital to tend to and they are bound by hospital policy. A doula is there to help you have the best birth possible.
#3. What happens in Labour and Delivery, stays in Labour and Delivery. If you yell and scream and swear, even at me, I won’t take it personally or judge you for it. Can you say the same for your mother or your best friend who wants to be in the delivery room with you?
#4. Continuity of care. A doula will be there with you through it all till the end. The nurses change shifts every 12 hours and often your doctor will only be there for the “last hurrah” but a doula is there from beginning to baby.
#5. You can ask a doula ANYTHING, nothing is TMI with a doula. You wouldn’t believe some of the questions that I have gotten from clients. Or the pictures…But seriously, you can call or text your doula about anything. Chances are you are not the first person to ask.
The bottom line is that doulas make a difference!
